Holiday Book Gift Exchange: Introduction

Updated: Jun 3, 2023

This holiday season we have to decided to do a book exchange for Shelf Explored Book Club! Michaela and Jacilyn have picked one of their favorite books to share with the other. The picks could be any book as long as the other person had not read it before and was less than 400 pages. We are very excited about our picks and we hope you enjoy this holiday fun!

Jacilyn's Pick

Michaela: I’m thinking Jac has picked a fantasy book. Probably one with some spiciness! Jac reads those kinds of books a lot so that’s my best educated guess.

Jacilyn: Michaela is of course correct, but now that I know she was onto me….. Part of me wishes I’d gone with my backup pick, which doesn’t fall under spicy fantasy at all! I chose The Awakening by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti, book one of the Zodiac Academy series, for Michaela this time around.

Like Michaela, our page limit prevented me from deciding on the first book that popped into my head for this (we’ll get to these longer books at some point though… keep your eyes out!), but this book was a close second. If you’re on Booktok, you’ve probably heard of Zodiac Academy. She knew this was one of the potential titles I’d choose for her, because this series hooked me from page one and I haven’t been able to stop talking about the world of Solaria since. Both of us enjoy a good found family trope, and this book certainly has that, along with plenty of intrigue, danger, and mystery. I think Michaela will enjoy the magic system the world has, and hopefully she’ll come to love our protagonists, Darcy and Tori, the way I do.

Michaela's Pick

Jacilyn: I think Michaela picked some sort of fairytale retelling. For the most part, we read a lot of similar books, especially with doing this book club together. But, Michaela loves her a good retelling, which I read less of, so that's my guess!

Michaela: As much as I would have liked to do a fairytale retelling, they were all too long for our page limit! Curses! Next time, next time. I will be forcing my love on fairytale retellings on Jac at some point but not this time! My choice is actually Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune. This author is one we both love from House in the Cerulean Sea, which Jac actually has a tattoo for. This book is beautiful, it’s the hug you didn’t know you needed. Similar to House in the Cerulean Sea, it has magical qualities and found-family but this time it’s not a family with children living life. Under the Whispering Door explores the afterlife, so I won’t lie its an emotional read but is so stunning. I cannot stress how amazing this book was for me, it is the best book I’ve ever read. HitCS is still my favorite but UtWD is right up there.

We hope you all are excited for our book exchange discussions and the books we chose! Here's to a happy and story filled holidays! Cheers!
