Kissing the Captain: Final Thoughts *Spoiler Free*

Updated: Feb 1, 2021

Now that we have finished reading Kissing the Captain by Kianna Alexander and taken the time to let it all *sink in*, we’re going to share our final thoughts on the book as a whole. Our goal is not to review the book, per se, but we will be sharing what we liked and disliked.

Spoiler Free! This post is our general opinions about this book, not a professional review, and contains no spoilers for Kissing the Captain.

Final Thoughts:

Michaela: As someone who does not typically like romance novels, I found Kissing the Captain to be pretty enjoyable. Since it was a novella the story definitely moved quickly but I don’t think that took me out of the story too much. It was a pretty quick and easy read for me. The story and characters did draw me but not as much in the beginning as in the second half. I really don’t think I knew where the story was going to go, though I did assume it would have a happy ending. I loved Lilly as a character but I struggled with fully liking Ricardo.

Overall I did like it but I’m not sure that I will reread it, at least not for a long time. And I’m still just not the biggest fan of romance novels yet, just not my thing. Also, the time period social norms were difficult for me to digest at times. But I have nothing against this book and I think I would recommend it to someone who does like romance stories and wants an intriguing quick read.

Jacilyn: "Kissing the Captain" is the first historical romance I've ever read, and I will say that it was a nice pallete cleanser after the very long, very intense book that was "A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes." Lilly was a stronger female lead than I was expecting, and I loved her determination and independence. I would have loved to get to know Lilly more, and maybe even hear more about the clothes she creates as a seamstress (I think both myself and Michaela can agree that we love details like that). I didn't fall in love with Ricardo by the end of the book, but he seemed to make a little bit of progress towards being a more likable man by the end of it. I'm still not sure that historical romance is the genre for me, per se, but it was nice to branch out and try something new. This is a good choice for a light, refreshing read!
