Summer Book Exchange 2023

Updated: Jul 1, 2023

Summer time is upon us and here at Shelf Explored Book Club we have decided to do a Summer Book Exchange. Similar to our winter holidays gift exchange we have picked one of our favorite books to share with the other. June will be Michaela's pick and July will be Jacilyn's pick! The picks could be any book as long as the other person had not read it before. We will be doing 3-4 discussions per book this time so we can delve into all the details!

Michaela’s Pick

Jacilyn: I’m definitely guessing fantasy for Michaela’s choice. I am once again either guessing a fairytale retelling, or perhaps Redwall? Why Redwall, you ask? She has mentioned it more in our regular conversations lately than she has in awhile! But last time I was totally wrong, so I’m excited to find out.

Michaela: I considered Redwall but I don’t know if it’s entirely your style, but maybe at some point. I’ve been re-reading the series through audiobooks lately. I'm only two books in but I am enjoying myself immensely! But your other guess was totally right, my choice is definitely a retelling. I read this book in 2020 and I ate. it. up. I read the end of this book at 4 am trying not to wake up my husband with my emotions! Join me in the adventure that is The Evil Queen by Gena Showalter! This is a YA novel following a girl named Everly Morrow as she goes on a whole journey through the forest of good and evil called Enchantia. In this land fairytales aren’t legends but prophecies to become fulfilled!

Jacilyn’s Pick

Michaela: I think Jac has definitely chosen a fantasy novel. I’m assuming it's one of the books she’s told me I need to read many times over. So either a book by Sarah J. Maas or Jennifer L. Armentrout, or a complete wild card choice!

Jacilyn: You got me, my choice is 100% a fantasy novel, and it’s 100% by Jennifer Armentrout! I would even consider my pick a very, very loose retelling of not a fairytale, but of Twilight (minus the toxic love triangle) - there aren’t the typical vampires and werewolves, but there are beings who share characteristics with them. The book I chose is the first of a series that is near and dear to my heart. It is the very first fantasy series I’ve read with a badass, larger-bodied heroine, the slow burn romance is *chef’s kiss*, and with each book I find myself wanting to know even more about their world. My pick for Michaela is From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout, which follows Poppy Balfour - the Maiden of the Kingdom of Solis, destined from birth to help usher in a new wave of the Ascended, the near-immortal ruling class. The Ascended are the intermediaries between the gods and the mortals of Solis… but things aren’t quite as they seem.

We hope you all are excited for our Summer Book Exchange discussions! Welcome to our versions of a summer beach read!
