The Golden Compass: Introduction

Updated: Jun 3, 2023

Hello friends! November's book is His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman.

In this book we follow Lyra and her Daemon as they encounter an adventure to the cold, far North, where witch clans and armored bears rule. North is where the Gobblers take the children they kidnap, on of which is Lyra's closest friend Roger. No one knows what they need these children for. North is also where her gruff and elusive uncle Asriel is tyring to build a bridge to a parallel world.

Can Lyra, just a small girl, make a difference in such a great and terrible endeavor? This is Lyra: a savage, a schemer, a liar. She is a fierce and a true champion her friend Roger and her Uncle Asriel need.

But what Lyra doesn't know is that to help one of them, she'll have to betray the other...

Pre-Read Thoughts:

Jacilyn: The Golden Compass is a re-read for me, but it’s a title that is near and dear to my heart. This is one of those titles from childhood that stuck with me through childhood and all the way into adulthood. With the new HBO show premiering last year, the buzz around His Dark Materials has picked up again and it has rekindled my love of the series. I’m always excited to have an opportunity to talk about this incredible world that Philip Pullman created, that blends magic and science and spirituality and religion. I feel the same way now as I did as a child - the world he’s created seems just out of reach of reality, and I yearn for it to be real. I can’t wait to discuss!

Michaela: I'm really excited about reading The Golden Compass. I have listened to the audiobook for this book a year or so ago while working and honestly I think I've forgotten most of the story. I'm excited to actually focus on the story and its many details. The world Pullman has created is fascinating to me and is truly consuming for me. The way his story blends magic with science immediately draws me in and my brain can't let go. I'm looking forward to learning about how this world works and what adventures Lyra will take us on.
