Final Thoughts:
Michaela: I was so excited to read Trail of Lightning because of the concept of it. And I was not disappointed. I loved this book so much and I can’t wait to read the next one. This was a different take on an apocalyptic, dystopian world that really captured my attention throughout the entire thing. Also, reading a novel written about Navajo culture and mythology by someone who belongs to that culture is always something to appreciate. There were so many characters to love in this book as well. This book has a badass leading lady named Maggie, who is struggling with the monster that is mental health while also struggling with a physical threat of supernatural monsters. I think Maggie was a great character to find yourself relating to when you didn’t think you would. Then other characters like Tah, Kai, Ma’ii, Grace, and others. All of them were so memorable in their own ways and a perfect team for the main character to fall back on, even when she didn’t think she needed them. I loved this book! I’m so glad we chose it.
Jacilyn: Trail of Lightning was so much fun. Michaela and I are both avid fans of dystopia books, which do tend to follow tropes that become pretty predictable, but this story was a fresh take on the genre. I really enjoyed the integration of Navajo mythology and culture as an element of magical realism in a world that has been ravaged by the very real and relevant threat of climate change. The idea of the Sixth World doesn’t feel like fantasy, and that made it even easier to feel close to a cast of complicated and oftentimes morally-ambiguous characters. I fully intend to continue reading the series, and am really looking forward to learning more about Dinétah and the rest of the Sixth World. This was a great way to begin 2021!
