Trail of Lightning: Introduction

Updated: Jun 3, 2023

Hello friends! January's book is Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse.

While most of the world is covered in water from a climate apocalypse, a place called Dinétah (formerly the Navajo reservation) has been reborn. The gods and heroes of legends walk the land again, but so do the monsters.

A Dinétah monster hunter, Maggie Hoskie, is a supernaturally gifted killer. She is the last, and best, hope a small town needs when a young girl goes missing. But Maggie uncovers something about the monster that is more terrifying than anything she has experienced before.

Maggie reluctantly has to enlist the aid of an unconventional medicine man, Kai Arviso. Together they have to travel to find clues from ancient legends, trade favors with tricksters, and battle dark witchcraft in a world full of deteriorating technology and resources.

Maggie will have to confront her past to help her discover the truth behind the disappearances if she wants to survive.

Welcome to the Sixth World.

Pre-Read Thoughts:

Jacilyn: I just started playing Cyberpunk 2077, and Trail of Lightning seems to have a similar vibe - a distant future world, rough and tumble, everyone looking out for themselves and resources hard to come by if you’re not rich. I’m looking forward to learning more about the world and how fantasy intersects into the story. The main character is also part of a culture that’s different from our own, so that will give a perspective that we’re not as used to. I’m looking forward to our first read of 2021!

Michaela: I am very ready to read another dystopian novel, one of my favorite genres, and this time it also has some supernatural/fantasy stuff in it! Everything I look for in a book. Not only are we going to thrust into an apocalyptic world but one also plagued by monsters. The main character, Maggie, sounds like a badass woman which I am so ready to read about her character. Also, this book is based in an Indigenous culture that I only know very little about, which is super exciting, and different from any previous dystopian novels I’ve read before. Reading books from the point of view of cultures different from your own is super important and we can learn so much from it. I am all around very much excited to read this book.
