When You Ask Me Where I'm Going: Intro

Updated: Jun 3, 2023

Hello friends! This month we are diving into the world of poetry with When You Ask Me Where I'm Going by Jasmin Kaur.

"Some poems are wrapped in silk and appear to be glistening gifts. Others cascade from the sky like violent hailstorms. At times, they are scattered across the landscape of lips and hide within closed fists.

Jasmin Kaur's striking debut novel is divided into six sections that speak to readers in poems, prose, and illustrations, and explore what it means to be a young woman living in the world that doesn't always hear her. She tells the story of Kiran, who flees a history of trauma, and raises her daughter, Sahaara, while living undocumented in North America. This powerful narrative of resilience, healing, empowerment, and love will galvanize readers to fight for what is right in their world." - summary as stated on the back cover of the paperback version of When You Ask Me Where I'm Going by Jasmin Kaur.

We are incredibly excited this month to read a book of poetry. We have experience reading poetry in our personal reading lives but this will be a first for Shelf Explored and we hope it'll be a new and interesting type of discussion. It will definitely take some getting used to for us but just reading the blurb gave us goosebumps!
